About

What this is, and what it isn’t.

The Kardashev Index ranks companies and other entities on a 0–10 scale in Kardashev terms: how much energy and compute they command, how fast that is growing, and — clearly labelled as opinion — how much they push the frontier. It is an independent, experimental project.

How scores are made

  • 01Mostly measured. 65% of the weight comes from figures companies report about themselves (energy, data-center capacity, capital spending), computed in code. Every figure links to the source page and the verbatim quote it came from.
  • 02Opinion, labelled. 35% of the weight is editorial judgement scored against written rubrics, marked “Opinion” wherever it appears.
  • AIAI-assisted. An AI model — currently xAI’s Grok (grok-4.3) — searches for sources, copies figures and quotes out of them, and scores the opinion categories. Its output is checked in code (quotes must appear verbatim in pages we fetched; numbers, units and magnitudes are validated) and all arithmetic is done in code. Individual scores are not reviewed by a human before publication; admins approve which entities are listed and can re-run them.
  • %Measured vs opinion share. Because missing data is never filled in, the share of a given entity’s score that is measured can differ from the nominal split. The leaderboard and each entity page show the measured share of what was actually scored.

Conflict-of-interest disclosure

The scoring model is made by xAI, and xAI is itself one of the entities ranked here. To limit the effect: measured categories are computed in code from quoted, verified figures, not from the model’s opinion; opinion categories must cite verified quotes and follow the same rubrics for every entity; and every score shows its sources and rationale so you can check it. You should still read xAI’s placement — and that of its competitors — with this in mind. The project receives no payment from any ranked entity.

Not investment advice

Nothing on this site is financial, investment, legal or other professional advice, or a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Scores are an experimental, partly AI-generated assessment and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Do your own research.

Corrections

If a figure, quote or source is wrong — including on your own company’s page — tell us which entity and what is wrong, ideally with a link to a primary source: a corrections address will be published here before launch. Confirmed errors are fixed by correcting the data and re-running the entity; every run is kept and its date is shown on the entity page.
